He was a lifelong member of New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. He was employed with the City of Raleigh for many years. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Barnes, Sr., and Ester Lee Barnes; four sisters, Joann, Essie Marie, Mammie Lee, and Shirley; two brothers, James Edward and Joe Larry; and unnamed twin brothers.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Barnes; one daughter, Carrie(Nakia) Sullivan, Collins, MS; one son, Ellis (Mashonda) Barnes, Magee, MS; 4 grandchildren, and one sister, Asia Marie Barnes, Boswell Rehabilitation Center, Sanatorium, MS; brothers, James Barnes, Joseph(Monica) Barnes, all of Taylorsville, and nephew/brother, Tom(Brat) Barnes, Mount Olive, MS. One aunt, Tina Keyes, Mize, MS; one uncle, J. C. Harnes, Taylorsville and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
